Our Story

a bit of history

The Couture Dollhouse was founded from a singular adoration of the artistry, heritage, and enduring elegance embodied in authentic vintage Hermès pieces. We are avid Hermès collectors. There is simply nothing more spectacular than a Hermès Birkin, Haut à Courroies, or Kelly bag. Once you hold one, it captivates your heart forever. At our core lies a profound adoration for collecting delicate and highly coveted pieces from around the world that reflect the extraordinary craftsmanship for which the historic French maison is renowned. Each piece represents not merely an accessory, but a fragment of design history—an artifact of meticulous handcraft and a testament to a legacy that has been carefully preserved for nearly two centuries.

The story of Hermès itself begins in 1837, when founder Thierry Hermès established a harness workshop in Paris dedicated to crafting the finest saddlery and equestrian goods for the European nobility. Over time, the house expanded into travel goods and leather accessories while preserving the same uncompromising standards of handcraft. This heritage eventually gave rise to the legendary Hermès handbags, many of which evolved from equestrian designs. The Haut à Courroies, introduced in 1892 to carry riding boots and saddles, would later inspire some of the most iconic handbags ever created, including the Kelly and the Birkin.

In the 1930s, Hermès refined the Haut à Courroies into a smaller, elegant structured bag known as the Sac à Dépêches. Decades later, the design gained international fame when Princess Grace Kelly was photographed carrying the bag in 1956, leading the house to rename the model in her honor. The Kelly remains one of the most recognizable luxury objects in the world, painstakingly handcrafted by a single artisan and requiring nearly twenty hours to complete.

Within this tradition of excellence, The Couture Dollhouse celebrates pieces whose stories span generations. Whether it is the remarkable discovery of a substantial 60 cm Haut à Courroies crafted more than eight decades ago, or the refined beauty of a 1960s vintage Kelly measuring a graceful 28 cm, the true allure lies not simply in rarity, but in the legacy each object represents. These pieces evoke the enduring spirit of Hermès artisanship—where each stitch, clasp, and contour reflects an unbroken lineage of savoir-faire.

Couture Dollhouse is, above all, a historic visual collage—an archival collection of images dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of vintage Hermès. The project presents a curated photographic narrative that highlights exceptional examples sourced from private collectors, established luxury resellers, and the wider global market of connoisseurs who share a passion for the maison’s craftsmanship. Many pieces within the archive originate from long-standing private collections or trusted purveyors, including luxury lifestyle specialists such as Mint Lifestyle in Beverly Hills, whose clientele includes collectors dedicated to preserving rare and pristine Hermès treasures.

In the world of high luxury, these exceptional pieces frequently circulate through respected auction houses and specialist marketplaces that connect discerning collectors across continents. We have worked with respected institutions such as Christie’s who regularly presents extraordinary Hermès handbags within their prestigious luxury sales, where rare pieces—from historic Haut à Courroies models to unique Birkins and Kellys—are recognized not only as fashion objects but as collectible works of design history. Vintage Hermès bags often command remarkable attention at auction, reflecting both their rarity and the enduring demand for exceptional craftsmanship.

Within this broader ecosystem of collectors, curators, and purveyors, our hub of friends, that make up the Couture Dollhouse, exists as both homage and archive. It is a space devoted to documenting the elegance, rarity, and cultural significance of vintage Hermès creations—objects that have passed through ateliers, private wardrobes, and historic collections before arriving here as part of a visual narrative.

Each image within the collage celebrates the quiet beauty of these enduring pieces of history. Together they form a living archive and solidify our appreciation of Hermès heritage, the collectors who preserve it, and the timeless objects that continue to inspire admiration across generations.
